Larry Delana Portis, 68, devoted Veteran, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, passed away November 26, 2019. Larry, born February 22, 1951, was raised in east Akron; where he was well liked by many and worked in the Portis Brothers Store. In his high school years, he graduated from East High School where he enjoyed competing in wrestling tournaments, which landed him in the state finals. He served our country for 7 years where he received an honorary discharge in 1980. While in the service Larry mastered in communications.
Later in life, Larry met the love of his life Joanne, and shortly after, knew he would devote the rest of his life to her. Their 41 year commitment has been rewarding by raising their children, grandchildren, foster children, childcare children, and neighborhood children. They did all this together, while Larry stayed gainfully employed managing at Midas Muffler for 28 years, and later retiring with 10 years of service with Metro RTA.
After retiring in 2018, Larry became a crossing guard for Akon Public Schools. He would go to work and then come home to perfect his yard. You can always catch Larry cracking a joke, hand dancing, and spending time with his wife and family. He was a great role model for young and old, who instilled positive values and examples of excellence.
Larry embraced Jehovah and was honored to be a baptized witness. His love, smile, and award winning personality was contagious to anyone who he connected with. His affection for his family is evident by everyone he touched. He will truly be missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and John Portis.; brother, Lorenzo Portis; sister, Jerry Dean Portis.
He leaves to cherish his memory, beloved wife, Joanne Portis; son, Tracey (Ayanna) Portis; daughters, Bridgette (Daniel) Long; Diedrea (Bobby) Swain, Mellisa and Chrystal Monday, Deetrah Portis; god daughters, Towanda (Greg) Mullins, Ruth Harrell; sister, Dorothy Portis; brothers, Willie (Linda) of California, Charles (Jean) Sr., Fiorello (Delissa) and Johnnie (Yvette) Portis; 26 Grandchildren; 21 Greatgrandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
