Elizabeth Joann Sellers, 84, was called to be with the Lord on May 25, 2023, surrounded by her loving family.
Affectionately known as Liz, she was active in her community. She was a member of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church and served as an usher. She was a member of the Interdenominational Church Usher’s Association (ICUA). Liz belonged to the North Hill Savings Club for many years and was also an Eastern Star and Past Worthy Matron of Children of Gethesmane 174.
Liz was a connoisseur of soul food. She served 32 years at Akron General Medical Center, as a cook. She was dedicated to her work and always had a positive attitude. She strived to do her best at whatever meals she prepared. Love was the main ingredient in her food, and she cooked on the job the same way she cooked for her loved ones. Liz also dedicated countless hours cooking and catering for her loved ones and church. People that were blessed with the opportunity to taste her cooking still rant and rave about its exquisite taste. Liz loved sports, especially basketball and football. She was also an avid bowler and belonged to the Bowlerette Bowling League.
Liz was an exceptional mother, wife and grandmother. For 60 beautiful years, she was married to the love of her life, Fredric Van Sellers I. She was patient, understanding, and kind and strived to maintain peace, harmony, and unity within her family. Her favorite past time was crocheting; she crafted several intricate “blankies” for her children and grandchildren. Additionally, Liz served as the team mother of the North High School track team and attended several of her children’s sporting events. She also attended many of her grandchildren’s ceremonies and performances. Her family always came first in her life, serving their needs before her own. Her family loved, respected, and cherished her dearly.
She was the epitome of class, style, and grace, never leaving home without her favorite shade of lipstick. When she wasn’t cooking or tending to the needs or her family, she would be at the hairdresser, painting her nails, or choosing an outfit for an event.
The family extends their gratitude to the staff of Timberland Ridge Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility and Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center for their loving care.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Thornton Sr. and Annie Gaines; husband, Fredric V. Sellers I; daughter, Cassie Sellers; son-in-law, Edward Stewart; sisters, Juanita Standifer, Eva Gaines, Barbara (Alvin) Lee, Geraldine (Albert) Pritchett, Donna Gaines and brother, Thornton Gaines Jr.
