Maurice William “Murf” Mundy, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2025, after a courageous battle with leukemia. He was 57 years old.

Born on July 28, 1967, Murf graduated from John R. Buchtel High School, class of 1985. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1995. His dedication to service continued in his civilian life through his employment with the Akron Metro Transit Authority for ten years. Prior to this, he worked at Twin Value, Staples, Walgreens, and Office Depot.

Beyond his professional life, Murf’s passion lay in coaching. He devoted 17 years to the Akron Parent Peewee Association, South Rangers, ultimately serving as Commissioner, mentoring countless young athletes and sharing his love for football. His faith was also a cornerstone of his life; he was a devoted member of New Trinity Baptist Church.

Murf’s joyful spirit and generous heart touched the lives of many. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Carla D. Mundy; his children, Carmica Tyler and Rodney L. Thompson Jr and Mychal J. Clayton (deceased).; his siblings, Jacqueline Reddick and Marilyn (Michael) Fountain; his aunt, Thelma Winn; his mother-in-law, Joyce (David) Clark; his grandchildren, Derrick Brown, Raina Thompson, Loyal Tyler, Lenox Tyler, and Ryna Thompson; his godchildren, Sydnee Leathers, Carrington Chatman, and Milachi Holt; and his dear friend, Ladonna Johnson. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives who cherish his memory.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie D. and Elinor Paige Mundy, and his brother, Johnnie Mundy.

A celebration of Murf’s life will be held Saturday, March 29, 2025, visitation 10:00 a.m. to Noon at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 327 Cuyahoga St. Akron, Oh 44310.
Funeral service will immediately follow. Interment Rose Hill Burial Park.
