Gwendolyn Carter was born August 27, 1951, to Otis Carter Sr and the late Rosetta Edmonds in Washington DC. She confessed Christ and was baptized at an early age at Smalls Memorial Baptist Church in Demopolis, Al. The family then moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1965.
Gwen was educated in the Cleveland Public Schools. She loved styling hair and went to Beatrice Academy of Beauty School, where she received her License in Cosmetology.
Gwen had a passionate zest for life. She enjoyed traveling, cooking, and caring for friends and family. Especially spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Gwen moved to Akron, Ohio, in 1992. Upon her move to Akron, Gwen visited, and in 2008 joined Perfecting Saint’s Church under the leadership of Dr. Ollie Colliner-Jones. Gwen loved The Lord and her church. She taught Sunday School and Bible Study, along with preparing and serving hot meals for the congregation.
Gwen departed this life on Friday, March 5, 2021. She leaves to cherish her memory, her lifelong partner, Jai Flake; 4 Children Karen Carter-Bell, Derrick Carter, Charlie Scott (Chris), and Arnetta Hill. 2 Grandchildren that preceded her in death, Keilah Bogarty and Diamond Russell. 12 Grandchildren, 14 Great-Grandchildren, 1 Sister Voncille Carter, 3 Brothers Otis Carter Jr., William B. Carter (Lucy), Purvis Thurman (Sonya) of Clinton, Maryland. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
