Dr. Robert L. Johnson, Sr., affectionately known as “Dr. J,” was born on January 27, 1941, in Akron, Ohio, to the late Orice Thomas and Carrie Johnson. On January 2, 2024, this extraordinary soul completed his earthly journey, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Robert’s roots in Akron ran deep, and it was in this community that he lived a life marked by resilience, wisdom, and an unwavering faith in God. A graduate of Central Hower High School, Robert embarked on a journey of lifelong learning that culminated in the attainment of his, Doctorate of Divinity from the International Apostolic University of Grace and Truth in Indianapolis, Indiana.
His professional journey led him to dedicate over two decades of service at Firestone Tire & Rubber Company as a tire builder and an additional five years at Goodyear Aerospace as a painter. However, it was in the spiritual realm that Robert found his true calling. For over 50 years, he served as an Elder and faithful member of First Apostolic Faith Church, contributing significantly to various ministries such as the Brotherhood, Prison Ministry, Life & Family Leadership, and visitation of the sick and shut-in.
A mentor, counselor, and coach to many, Robert’s impact went far beyond the workplace. His love for God, combined with his extensive knowledge as a professor and Bible scholar, inspired those around him. Passionate about preaching, he always had a scripture to share, weaving wisdom into every conversation. Robert’s eloquence and profound insights left an indelible mark on all who crossed his path.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Orice and Carrie (Mama Honey), as well as his sisters Erma and Janice, and brothers Walter and Thomas (Tom T).
He leaves behind a grieving yet celebratory community, including his beloved wife Patricia, children Rob (Yvette), Tracy, Starlyn, Pam (Dee) Williams, Phylicia (Aziz) Musa, Rachel, Robert, and his spiritual son Dave (Gilcreast). In addition, he is survived by his brothers John Henry (Sandra), Elder Louis (Ev. Loretta) Johnson, 16 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A lifelong friend, John Bryant, shares in the mourning of this profound loss.
