Larry “Bird” Williamson Jr.

January 26, 1960 – July 27, 2026

Larry C. Williamson Jr. affectionately known as “BIRD” peacefully transitioned from labor to reward at the age of 66. He was born on January 26, 1960, in Akron, Ohio, to the late Larry C. Williamson Sr. and Ella L. Williamson.

Larry attended Akron Public Schools and graduated from John R. Buchtel High School in 1979. Following graduation, he worked a variety of jobs throughout his life. Known for his strong work ethic, Larry believed in working hard and took pride in every opportunity he was given. Although Larry was a man of few words, when he spoke, people listened. Affectionately known throughout the Akron community as “Bird,” he was a familiar face whose presence brought comfort and joy to many. He got the nickname “BIRD” from playing basketball and shooting 3-point shots. Larry enjoyed life’s simple pleasures, but above all, he treasured the time he spent with family and friends. Family meant everything to Larry. If there was a family gathering, reunion, cookout, or celebration, you could count on him being there, usually arriving early. He was never just a guest; he was part of the setup crew and stayed until everything was cleaned up and put away. If something wasn’t being done the way he thought it should be, Larry wasn’t shy about speaking up. His loved ones knew it came from a place of love and wanted everything to be just right.

Larry was a devoted sports enthusiast with an incredible memory for statistics, players, and teams. He faithfully supported his alma mater, John R. Buchtel High School, by attending football and basketball games. Whenever one of his nieces, nephews or his friend’s children was competing, Larry was proudly in the stands, making sure everyone knew exactly who he was cheering for, especially if they were playing well. His knowledge of sports was unmatched, and he could hold a conversation about almost any team or sporting event. Larry also loved his community. He enjoyed attending neighborhood events, festivals, and concerts at Lock 3. Larry especially enjoyed traveling with his extended families, the Hamilton family and the Dowdell family, creating memories that will be cherished for years to come. Larry also took pride in his appearance. Whether he was dressed in a sharp suit topped with one of his signature hats or wearing one of his favorite sports jerseys, he always made sure he looked his best. His nephew Darren made sure his tennis shoe collection stayed fresh and his shoe game remained on point. Larry’s life was marked by the love he shared with his family and friends. His memory will continue to live on through the many lives he touched. Even though he is no longer with us in this world his spirit and love will remain with those who knew and loved him.

Larry was preceded in death by his father, Larry C. Williamson Sr.; his mother, Ella L. Williamson; his grandmother, Eva Culver; his sister, Yolanda Williamson; and his beloved niece, Kyndall Atkins.

He leaves to cherish his precious memory his loving sisters, Tanya Lawrence, Sheila Carter, Joy Kyndall, all of Akron, Ohio, and Annette Williamson of Waldorf, Maryland; his brothers, Larry Darrington and Derrick Williamson, both of Akron, Ohio, and Gerald Williamson of College Park, Georgia; Aunts, Kim Culver of Akron and Jeanette (Howard) Meade of Pomona CA; special cousin, Mary Helen; his extended family, Mattie Hamilton and family, Rose Carlyle, and George “Future Shock” Dowdell Jr. and family; along with a host of cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and dear friends.

Though Larry has departed this earthly life, the memories of his unwavering love for family, his passion for sports, his unmistakable presence in the Akron community, and the quiet strength he carried with him will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
